Where We Work
IDEX works in six countries: Guatemala, India, Mexico, Nepal, South Africa and Zimbabwe. Click on the flags to learn more about our grantees in each country.
There are a few common denominators running through all IDEX-supported projects and initiatives. They all serve marginalized people, especially women who are often from indigenous communities or ethnic minorities in their region. The three themes are:
Women’s empowerment
In most cases, women stand to gain the most in any poor family or community. Women often are heads of households and typically oversee the education and diet of their children. When they are empowered, whole families become empowered.
Building local economies
Poverty is the “800 lb gorilla in the room.” Helping families to build income is fundamental to solving a host of other problems: from health or education, to participation in local advocacy campaigns or community initiatives.
Caring for the environment
Most of the communities IDEX supports are rural, and therefore their land, water, or seeds are the lynchpin to their economic development.
