Founded in 1995 as a coalition of 16 communities working for environmental justice, the South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) seeks to end industrial pollution in South Durban and elsewhere. More than 500,000 people live in the South African city where rampant industrial pollution has resulted in numerous health problems, including respiratory illnesses and cancer.

"Working with the communities and educating the people that have been at the wrath of the industries that continue to pollute our skies every day, has brought me the greatest joy." Lushendrie Naidu, Project Officer at SDCEA

To combat pollution, SDCEA provides valuable training on air quality monitoring and environmental awareness, encouraging community members to advocate for greater environmental protections. SDCEA also approaches large industries and government authorities about South Durban's environmental issues and presents methods to improve the city's environment and quality of life.

Find out more about the work of SDCEA by watching "Beauty and the Beasts," a documentary film about the high levels of pollution in the South Durban Basin and SDCEA's environmental advocacy work. There are 6 parts to this film: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6.

You can also learn more about what SDCEA does on the IDEX blog and by checking out their newly relaunched website.
