Grantmaking Criteria
A youth group in South Africa learns good nutrition and how to protect themselves against HIV/AIDS.
IDEX limits its partnerships – its funding – to poverty alleviation organizations in 6 target countries: Guatemala, India, Mexico, Nepal, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
How We Grant
When we are looking to fund new groups, we go through a series of steps:
Selection Process
- We research a dozen prospective organizations “on paper,” reviewing their websites, financials, etc. We also collect recommendations from current partners in the region and other international development organizations.
- Next we conduct site visits with 5 to 8 organizations or more and meet with the staff, board members, and the communities involved.
- Then we select 2 to 4 organizations to receive small grants (approximately $5,000) for projects of 6-12 months in duration as a way of exploring our relationship with them.
- Finally, after the small grant period is up, we invite 1 or 2 impressive grantees to become a “partner.” This entails a 3-year funding commitment on IDEX’s part with grants of $15,000 or more.
IDEX does not fund individuals. IDEX does not accept unsolicited proposals for partnership or grants. We invite new partners a few at a time in 1-2 countries at a time, every 1-2 years.
