If you are looking for another way to support IDEX and our international partners, look no further!
As we unpack and settle in to our new office at 333 Valencia, we would love your help in procuring a few items at low or no cost and in gently used condition from your offices, homes and networks. Many of you know the story of how IDEX’s current furniture came from a board member’s personal contact at a company that was giving it away, and how all the stunning photos that grace our office walls were a special gift from an IDEX supporter.
We are so appreciative of these types of donations as these savings translate into more resources for our partners!
Our wishlist includes the following items:
- Ergonomic keyboard trays
- Large photo/slide archive boxes
- Business phones
- Microphone for video recording
- Telephone headsets
- Computer headsets
- Video camera and tripod
- Digital pens (for note-taking in the field)
- Air miles (to facilitate travel to visit donors and partners)
- Macbook laptops (to replace failing desktop computers)
- Large Apple-compatible computer screens
- Shredder
If you can help us out with any of these items, please contact us at info@idex.org
Also note that these donations are tax-deductible!
Thank you from all of us at IDEX

Susan Kahn and David Kaskowitz
When Susan Kahn came home to San Francisco after travelling extensively in Guatemala and Mexico in the 1990’s, she came home invigorated with the sense of wanting to give back to the international community. When Susan first learned about IDEX, she offered to become a volunteer in a bid to satisfy her passion for grassroots development and supporting local initiatives.
Reflecting back on the time she spent at IDEX, Susan says she was most impressed by the “really close and personal connections IDEX shares with their local partners.” Read the rest of this entry »
Have you heard IDEX has moved? After over 20 years at 827 Valencia Street, we’ve pulled up our roots and headed a few blocks north to 333 Valencia Street.
The decision to move was both exciting and overwhelming. 827 Valencia was IDEX’s home. It had welcomed partners, supporters, allies, and volunteers for many years. But as some of you know it had its quirks, and after putting out feelers for other spaces it become clear that we could get a much better deal.
We are delighted to have a new home at 333 Valencia Street, also known as The Fog Building. It houses a number of other non-profits and also for-profits.
Even better it is lower cost, more energy efficient, clean, spacious, bright and with our final touches it is now a beautiful new home for IDEX.
Mindful that a move in itself is not usually inexpensive, we were able to negotiate excellent rates and many of our moving costs were heavily discounted. What’s more our new space is actually bigger than we need, and we are subleasing about 500 square feet as of January 1, to further minimize our costs.
Also, don’t forget December 8 is our housewarming celebration. We would love for you to help us warm our new IDEX office/community space with your special presence.
And for all of our partners and friends around the world who are too far away to attend, your presence will be missed but we will be thinking of you – for the “true” IDEX cannot be housed in any one location- it is the relationships that we have with all of you that make up our IDEX family!
The following was written by Kellye Denton, a long-term IDEX Volunteer, as she reflects back on her time at IDEX.
Although I had gained valuable experience in my previous professional role, I began questioning the path my career was taking. Suddenly, I was thirsty for a change.
Realizing my true passions lay elsewhere and that I was in a unique position to be a part of something greater than myself, I quit my paying job and started volunteering at IDEX! Read the rest of this entry »

What happens when you put two Californians together who share an equal thirst for adventure and social change? Grassroutes of course.

IDEX is both pleased and humbled to announce that it has recently been chosen as one of two grantees to receive grants of both time and money from the Full Circle Fund.
The Full Circle Fund is a philanthropy organization whose mission is towards cultivating the next generation of community leaders and creating social change in the Bay Area and internationally. Full Circle Fund recruits top leaders from the private, public, and nonprofit sectors, and empowers them to leverage their experience, connections, and financial resources to benefit outstanding community organizations.
IDEX’s community was sad to learn that one of its esteemed supporters passed away in March at the age of 70. IDEX will be forever grateful to John Arthur Shaub (Jack) who added immense value in helping expand our grantmaking in India.

Traveling and volunteering have always been important parts of my life, and I had wanted to get involved with an organization that worked to decrease poverty in developing countries and IDEX’s approach appealed to me.
